How to Make Easy Mixed Media Flowers

These mixed media flowers were inspired by projects by Barb Owen and Stitches by Julia. You will want to check out both of their YouTube channels -- they are full of amazing creative ideas.

I do a lot of projects using old book pages and covers, and often end up with a surplus of book paper. This project will help bust your stash of book pages,while building your stash of embellishments.
Use these flowers to decorate journal covers, cards, or gifts -- the possibilities are limitless.

Begin by applying your medium of choice to a book page (or magazine page or whatever).  I like to swirl the color around, using colors that are close to each other on the color wheel. For this page, I used Jane Davenport Mermaid Markers. You might also use regular markers, watercolors, gel sticks, watercolor crayons, acrylics, etc.

Make five to seven circles, but don't make them perfect. Your circles should vary in size from small to large.

Add additional interest by stamping or scribbling or splattering or outlining. There are no rules here -- just use what you have on hand.

Net cut out your circles, imperfectly, and stack them together, large to small, as shown. 

Use a pokey tool to make a hole in the stack, and insert a brad. 

Scrunch up the layers to give the flowers dimension. Alternatively, you can scrunch the individual circles before stacking and inserting the brad. Experiment to find the look you like best.

If you don't have any brads on hand, you can use a small dab of glue between each layer. It's not a quick and easy as using a brad, but it works. {Hint: if you will be using a wax based medium to color your flowers, leave a little of the paper bare in the center of each circle, so the glue can grab.} Glue a little bling or a button to your flower center, and you're done!

Be warned, this project is addictive, and before you know it, you will have a big pile of beautiful blooms.  Enjoy!
